Hong Meng's farewell

Saying farewell is always difficult. Fortunatley HM is only heading north to KL, and promises to visit every 3 or 4 months. We asked him how he felt; he said that the past 5 years (most of which was with the DG) had passed really quickly, and yet 5 years is a long time.

During these 5 years, HM had seen the DG from its infancy at the International Plaza at the Goh's old place, to their new place, to Spottiswoode, and finally to Kelp's place. Many people have come and gone. Yet, throughout all this time, Christ has always been in the centre of it all. And we know our earthly partings are but a split second in the eternity we will enjoy as brothers and sisters.

So fare thee well, Hong Meng, we pray you will continue to live and breathe Christ -- like the old refrain "somewhere out there ... beneath the clear blue sky" ... we will worship the same God, and love the same body that is Christ's.

Church Camp Musings

so, church camp has come and gone. we're embarking on the books of Malachi and Obadiah now.

for those who went, do you have any thoughts to share?
is there anything you'll like to put into place re DG, or in your life?

for those who attended the Adults' Meeting last night, you would have heard Chris preach on the overview of the two books mentioned above. it was strange to realise that my journey at ARPC seems to have come full circle - when I first stepped into the hallowed halls of this church, Chris was just finishing up a series on Malachi. but i digress...

what struck me last night, was the exhortations for DG life that were printed out, one of which was to be more Christlike.

it is such a heavy task isn't it? how do you give and give as Christ did? How do you love, like He did?

Only by the grace of God, with the support and help of fellow believers, and the Holy Spirit Himself.

Remember to turn up for DG next Tuesday!

CBBDG Conquers Tree Top Walk

Okay this one is a bit delayed. Not least because the film was stuck in my SLR camera for the longest time. We decided sometime in early January to go for the treetop walk that we had heard so much about. It was a 10km trek through Singapore's Nature Reserve, culminating in a short 3 min walk across the tree-top, gazing across the canopies.

So here's us, looking really happy after the 7km mark, just before the tree-top walk

And here's the perplexed face of Ruth at the walk ("You mean we walked all the way for this swinging bridge??!!")

Along the way, we came across a rare sighting of the Malayan Flying Lemur (also known in Bahasa as the Colugo)! I took about 10 shots of it from using the Nikon 300mm lens. Came out a bit shaky, considering the poor lighting in the dense forest.

Took us a while to figure out what it was. Apparently they were thought to be extinct from Singapore's Nature Reserves, but a NUS student had claimed that there were some 3,000 living in our forests -- a "sustainable population". Can find the article here.

Hari Raya Festivities at Weilee and Karen's

Many thanks to Weilee and Karen for opening up their house for a swim and lunch last Friday during the Hari Raya break (where baby Isaac showed his talent in mimicking his dad - though his photo was taken some time ago at the DG retreat).

Our DG had a great time at Weilee and Karen's, although I think I (we) may have veged out a bit too much watching 2 movies (Scary Movie 3 which was rather funny indeed, but not too edifying and Taxi 3, which was cool!) and for some of us.... plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of Dilbert.

Hope all of us had a good weekend this week. Not just fun and games, but also time to reflect and have Quiet Time with God. Let's not forget the resolutions we made at the beginning of the year, to grow in our relationship with God -- and let us continue to encourage one another to do so, and be accountable! :-)

(I haven't really spent time reading the Bible seriously yet this weekend as lots of activities, but there's still time before I go to bed.. so will do so shortly!)

The first of a series of tsunami waves hit Sri Lanka in the early morning of 26 December 2004.

Thousands have already been killed, and hundreds of thousands more have lost their homes. Whole families have been washed away into the sea in this catastrophe.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has declared a State of National Disaster, and has already sent out an appeal for international aid.

We at SriLankan Airlines also wish to proactively help where we can, to do what little we can to ease the suffering of the people. To that end, we are appealing to you, our business associates, to open your hearts and contribute the following items to be airlifted to Sri Lanka.

1. Tents
2. Food (Pre-cooked or ready-to-eat meal packs)
3. Water Purification Tablets
4. Wheat Flour, rice, other staples
5. Drugs: Paracetamol, anti-biotics, wound dressing, suture material, disposable syringes, vitamins, and vaccinations for diarrhea, cholera and malaria.
6. Intravenous infusions (saline and dextrose)
7. Portable generators
8. Clothes and blankets

For small parcels/items, we would appreciate you sending your donations down to our office at 133 Cecil Street, Keck Seng Tower, #13-02, Singapore 069535.

we'll be having our yearly DG retreat on 1 January 2005. it can't come soon enough, i think - for the christmas season is upon us in its full commercial glory (witness shopping experience in orchard road yesterday) and we seem to forget why we put aside the 25th to celebrate.

Water Polo, anyone?

the waterside DG has invited us to a water-polo match next Monday, on the hari raya public holiday. please let me know if you can make it, so far we have the following details -

venue - Singapore Sports School (Woodlands)
time - about 930-ish

the CBD DG and the Waterside DG were once part of the IP DG, so this will be a reunion of sorts!

we had a new teacher yesterday - mr B himself! (no, not Boaz, of Ruth, but note the similarities in name... heheh.)

it was great to work through the 2nd chapter of Ruth from the three main characters' perspective - the bitter, now hopeful Naomi, the righteous, and kind Boaz, and the humble, obedient Ruth. and praying and sharing together in a larger group of brothers and sisters was a good experience as well!

here's a link to John Piper's series of sermons on Ruth. I found them especially useful in seeing the book of Ruth as a whole. He suggests that the main lesson of Ruth is this -

The life of the godly is not a straight line to glory, but they do get there.

Here's a photo that should have been put up yonks ago -- Chen Yi's baptism! "Hurry hurry! I didn't bring my camera!" urged Ruth, and off I went to the centre aisle with my handy O2 phone to capture a moment that marked the rapturous singing of angels in heaven -- only we couldn't hear it (yet). Baptisms are powerful moments. They remind me of our own individual promises to put our lives aside (nailing them to the cross, actually) and embracing Christ as our Alpha and Omega. How far we've come, sometimes, depends on how much we remember this day -- our promised faithfulness to Christ. Welcome Chen Yi!!!! =)

a novel idea

Blogging has become quite popular these days. And it has penetrated even the members of the hushed group known only by the acronym, CBDDG. At the last count, at least five members of the group had blogs with one person having at least two!

Well, now who said blogs had to be personal or individual? Why can't a group own a blog? Why can't the entire CBDDG have a blog of its own?

For this novel idea, we have to thank A!, a very dedicated member of the CBDDG, who quietly "choped" the cbddg.blogspot.com site (ye cyber squatter you!) many months ago and sat on it till it has blossomed into a burgeoning site.

And what might be the purpose of this lovely site? To mirror the life of the group - with pictures, prayer requests, announcements, reflections on the Word, hyperlinks to good articles to read, conversations and the like.

To one and all, welcome to CBDDG online! ^__^
